Welcome to Basketry, Etc. Please check our new additions.

Nantucket Baskets were originally made on the lightship which was anchored off Nantucket for periods of six to eight months. Woven with cane over a wooden mould, these sturdy little baskets had wooden bases and handles. Later Jose Reyes added a lid and called his baskets “friendship baskets.” Thus the Nantucket Pocketbook began.

Maggie Silva, a retired Early Childhood School Psychologist of Raynham, Massachusetts, has been making baskets since 1984. A teacher, author, and lecturer, she often creates her own Nantucket styles. Her husband Eddie and son Jim design her prototype moulds. She is a member of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild, Penn-Jersey Basketry Guild, North Carolina Basketmakers Association, Association of Michigan Basketmakers and the Nantucket Basket Makers and Merchants Association. Maggie also offers open weave classes and private lessons at her studio.

Hand-crafted by Maggie, each basket has at least four hand rubbed coats of finish. Basketry, Etc. offers many traditional styles and sizes as well as Maggie’s original designs. Sizes range from miniature rounds and ovals to a full sized cradle.
