Another theory of the origin of the Nantucket basket is that it came from the cooperage tradition. Many coopers made whale-oil casks and other containers during the pre-Revolutionary War period. The construction of a Nantucket basket and that of a wooden barrel include flat wooden bottoms and wooden staves. The rims of the basket are similar to the hoops of a barrel. Nantucket baskets appear to some to be more similar to the coopers barrels than it does to the traditional Indian baskets of the time. In fact several of the early basketmakers came from coopers families.
