Nantucket baskets are a distinctive type of American handicraft. Sailors from the whaling ships discovered rattan, a long vine used to weave the baskets, while visiting the Pacific islands. They substituted cane for ribs and weavers used by Algonquin Indians and added a wooden bottom. The earliest of these baskets were probably made in the 1820's. These baskets were known as "rattan baskets".
