"Rotan", a Malay word, which becomes "rattan" in English, grows in Southeast Asia. Rattan grows in the deep forest as a vine that reaches to the upper forest canopy. It is harvested by pulling it down and cutting it into manageable lengths. The "bark" or "skin" is the material we call cane and is used as ribs and/or weavers.
